WHERE TO LEARN MORE

Here are a list of resources that I have found helpful in my study and prayer

Letter to Artists
St. John Paul II

This letter is the one that inspired the name of this blog and is a constant reminder of the importance of artists and beauty in the world.

How Catholic Art Saved The Faith: The Triumph of Beauty and Truth in Counter-Reformation Art

Dr. Elizabeth Lev

One of the best books on Catholic art by my favorite (Catholic!) art historian, Elizabeth Lev. This sparked an interest in my undergraduate study on Counter-Reformation art.

New Liturgical Movement

Another great blog about sacred liturgy and liturgical arts. There are several contributors that specialize in different areas.

Visio Divina: Praying with Sacred Art

This is a great book to have to bring art into prayer in a guided way. It has beautiful reflections and questions about several different types of art pieces, along with space to journal.

Behold Visio Divina

This wonderful ministry has multiple resources such as books, virtual groups, retreats, and events all focused on sacred art and learning how to pray with it. It was started by Katie Weiss, and incredibly kind and faithful Catholic woman.

The Silent Knight: A History of St. Joseph Depicted in Art

Dr. Elizabeth Lev

A beautiful book on St. Joseph, who has definitely been silent in art over the centuries. It is such a blessing to read her reflections on St. Joseph especially in light of the year of St. Joseph in 2021.

Masters' Gallery Rome

A great place for online courses, tours, and lectures on art in Rome. Not all are focused on the sacred, but there are great options that connect with the Catholic faith. There is a mix of paid and free lectures!

The Ache Speaks with Mother Petra

The What God is Not podcast is a personal favorite of mine, but this episode is particularly powerful. It talks about our innate ache for beauty.

Liturgical Arts Journal

A great blog with several contributors that talk about different types of liturgical art including music, vestments, architecture, and more.

St. Croix Catholic Iconographers Guild

If you want to try your hand at creating religious art, this is a great place to go. They hold monthly meetings and workshops for different levels of artists. This is a great way to get into iconography and grow in understanding of this beautiful art style. This guild is based in St. Croix, Minnesota.
